Company Signs Made

Some of the
Sign Designers today have incorporated art, into the visual display of signage. The Sign industry has come along way since the painted wood signs plastered over the exterior wall and white washed, with the name of the business. Most of the time the cities signs would just read what they where selling. since they where the only business in town, no need for name.

Now take a drive down Vegas blvd. look at the artwork incorporated into the signage. Well you really dont have to go to vegas. you could just use Google maps. You can see some the design and thought put into this signs.

When it comes time for you to change your Plastic Signs, consider adding some kind of artwork to your sign design. With the digital process’s available today, the sky is the limit.

Repair your own Sign.

If you have a little handy man or women, in you, it is quite possible you may be able to repair your own sign. I will share some of my sign service experience to help you solve your own lighted sign problem. Sorry sign company competitors’, but I know there are capable people, who can save themselves a lot of money, over the lifetime of their business sign.
When I first started working on electric signs, I did experience the power and pain of electricity, so first off, make sure you’re careful! If you have a neon sign, or lighted channel letters, these signs have the highest voltage, and will give you a good jolt. Make sure the power is off. I made the mistake of asking a customer to turn their sign off, and of course 15,000 volts numbed my arm. So make sure the power is off.
There are only a few things that could cause your sign not to light. The first one we already mentioned. Make sure you have power. It starts at the circuit breaker panel. The next thing could be the wall switch. Most signs are not wired this way, but you may have a neon window sign that plugs into a wall, which could be controlled by a switch. The most common type of control to automatically turn on your sign would be a time clock. This is a clock with trippers to turn on at night, and off during the day. I don’t know how many times I have had to charge a customer to service their sign, and find the time clock set wrong. Coming on during the day and turning off at night, there are directions to set the clock on the inside door of the time clock. Check here first.
The next thing to check would be the ends of the neon or light bulbs. The ends will be blackened if they are bad. Check the sockets if you have light bulbs. Inspect the wiring. If there are any shorted out wires, you will see them, and you can smell the burnt insulation. You will have to replace any damaged wires or sockets. The parts you need can be found at your local electrical supply or sign supply house. You also can search for the parts online. If you have bad neon, look for a local sign company who bends their own neon. Not all sign companies bend neon or service lighted signs. The do outsource, so you will pay more if you don’t find a company that does their own. We have migrated to LED lights and have a local wholesale neon company make are neon so we stay competitive.
The last thing that could be causing your sign not to light would be the transformer or light ballast. If all the above things check out, this would be the last thing to check, and of course, the most expensive. You can sometimes see the insulation of the transformer or ballast leaking out. It will be a black sticky tar like substance. If this leaks out the wiring of the transformer overheats and shorts out. Neon transformers only have 2 wires to hook up the lights. Sign Ballast’s have several wires, but are color coated for easy rewire. You can find the information printed on the transformer to get a replacement. Again just search it on the internet. If you get stumped I will gladly give some free advice, just shoot me an email.

Anaheim, CA. October 14th, 2009 – Anaheim Sign Company today announced they will use only Low Voltage LED lighting, and energy efficient electronic ballasts to light all there Sign Products. By using these types of lighting in place of the traditional neon sign lighting, Owner Rick Hobbs states that,” business sign owners, can expect to save 90% of the energy consumed by their current sign.
Most existing signs are currently not energy efficient. Some of the ballasts and lighting, dates back up to 20 years, when energy efficiency, was not a concern.
Rick Hobbs of Anaheim Signs stated, “Our goal is to have every sign that we manufacture to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly. In fact when we go to service an existing sign we are recommending that are customers switch over to energy efficient sign lighting. With the current energy crisis and worries of global warming, the use of these products in Las Vegas alone would save an enormous amount of energy. We have already implemented the use of these products on about 50% of are currant signage products which can be seen at: www.anaheimsigns.biz.

Art of Estimating

Filed under: Business Signs, Uncategorized — Tags: Business Signs. letters, concrete monuments — admin @ 2:00 am

One of the hardest parts about being a business owner,
contractor, or self employed, is estimating the costs
associated with producing goods or services. If your dealing
with an item that has a set cost, and you know all your
overhead costs associated with manufacturing your product,
you just need to determine what you want your profit
margin to be.

Sounds simple enough. But what if you are just starting you
business. You dont have a clue how long it will take to make
your product, or how much to charge. If you price it to low,
you will lose money, to high, you wont sell anything. Either
way you wont be in business long.

Unless you have actually worked in the production of your
product, or have a vast knowledge of your industry, there is
no way a person is going to be able to estimate the costs,
without some idea of the time that is invloved.

The time it takes one person to do a task, will be differant
from others. Your material costs normally stay static, but
labor costs vary.

One of the tricks I used when I first started out, was to call
on my competetors and ask for a quote on a sign, that I
hold no idea how to price. It was for a concrete monument
sign, I knew I could make the foam letters for the form, but
I had no idea the time it would take to fabricate the form.

Well after the first couple of signs, I was able to dial in my
costs, and have produced a ton of signs since.

If your struggling with estimating, you may want to
consider getting a quote from a competetor or two, until you
get the hang of it.

Is your Business Sign visible?

Your business Sign needs to be visible, Anaheim Sign Company can make you visible. If no one can see your sign, your business will suffer. There needs to be contrast, it needs to be readable. Some logos and fonts look nice on letterhead, but they are just not readable on your store front or wall sign. Look at all the major corporations, their logos and letters, have contrast (McDonalds’ is a good example, they use red and white). Not my favorite color combination but it does stand out.

If your location permits monument signs, or pole signs, street signs are the most visible for drivers to see. Lighted monument signs stand out the best at night, Concrete monument signs offer the best durability. We like to use low voltage LED lighting. Green eco freindly signs cost 90% less then high voltage neon signs, or sign light boxes.

What Are Some of the Legal Issues with Business Signs that I Should Know?

  • Almost all local governments control the construction, materials, electrical or other operating components, size, numbers and location of business signs. Typically, standards for construction, materials, and operation are found in local building and electrical codes; regulations controlling physical parameters and placement or display are found either as part of a comprehensive land use zoning code or in a separate sign code.
  • Business signs are considered a form of commercial speech that has significant protection from unlawful government interference under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Also, under the Fourteenth Amendment, local governments are required to provide due process and equal treatment to all applicants as part of the sign permitting process.
  • There are federal laws protecting a sign company or business owner when someone tries to copy the design, artwork, or wording of a business sign without authorization. For example, an innovative method for constructing a sign may be protected by a patent, the original artwork on a sign may be copyrighted, and a unique business logo may obtain both trademark and copyright protection.
  • Whether a business owner owns or leases the sign, the sign is a business asset and receives the same tax treatment as any other tangible business property.

Building and Electrical Codes
  • The construction, installation, and operation of any permanent business sign will need to conform to all applicable building and electrical codes. Because compliance with these codes requires specialized technical expertise, a business owner should specify that conformity to these codes is the responsibility of the sign company that builds and installs a business sign. This responsibility would extend to the sign company’s subcontractors.
Local Zoning or Sign Codes
  • Nearly every local government regulates the display of business signs. Such regulations are found either in the local zoning code or a separate “sign code.”
  • Anaheim Signs is familiar with local zoning codes and can get permits as needed.
